Notes From the HIMBA AGM by our new President Jill Candlish
Hello HIMBA Membership,
Thanks for a great AGM last week. It was a pleasure to see over a dozen of us out, showing such strong enthusiasm and support for mountain biking on Hornby. I enjoyed learning the history of the organization and hearing about the incredible dedication that’s gone into building and maintaining the trails, events, etc over the years. Lots of heart and passion here.
Meeting Highlights: (Board members – please make corrections or add important bits I may have left out.)
Elected Board Members, by acclamation – Executive: Jill Candlish (Pres), Yana Pethik (VP), Tig Cross (Sec), Sasha LeBaron (Treas). Members at large: Tom Rutherford, Brett Martens, Peggy Kabush, Jeremy Payne. Big gratitude goes out to the previous members for their work and commitment.
Trails Update – Sasha, Tom, and Yana are on the HIRRA Parks & Trails Committee, and are our liaisons with the Regional District, who provide a budget for the ongoing Park’s contract work carried out by Yana. Alongside Yana’s work, Tom’s coordination of volunteer work parties will continue the important work of trail maintenance on the mountain. The HIMBA Adopt-a-Trail program is also working well with energy input from Doug Chinnery, Alan Fletcher, Peggy and Denis Kabush, Tig, Sasha, and Robb White.
Upcoming Events
No Horses Race scheduled for Sunday, May 20th, registration noon, race at 1pm. Watch for Jeremy’s fabulous poster.
Enduro Island Cup sanctioned Race, Sunday, July 8, details tba.
Committees – We created three new committees:
– Trails Character Committee – (Sasha) – The HIRRA Parks & Trails committee has been updated on our intention to look at the ‘character’ of our trails (flow, technical, green, blue, black, loops, etc). We will make recommendations, that they might add to their plans, as to which trails to work on and how. This new committee includes: Brett, Jeremy, Robb, Denis, jill and Dean Samuel.
– Ballpark Bikepark and Pumptrack Committee – (Jeremy) – Jeremy and Sasha are doing planning and prep work, including grant-writing for this project. HIMBA passed a motion to put $2000.00 into implementing the plans. Brett is going to step in, and hopefully some young families will get involved to create a fabulous bikepark for everyone.
– Race Committee – (Tig) – There’s lots of enthusiasm for races, and we’ll need a solid organizing group, including: Jeremy, Peggy, Sasha, Brett, Dean, Jody Rutherford and Nigel Fletcher.
Please let us know if you’d like to join a committee, adopt-a-trail, or help out at an event or volunteer day. Look out for revenue generating HIMBA merchandise in the plans (trail map poster, T-shirts). There were some great ideas shared about group rides, bike camps, etc. Feel free to pass your feedback/suggestions on to any board member. Hugs for everyone’s input.
The trails have been in super condition (except for during the ride we got snowed on last Sunday!)… See you out there!
